Maeng Jeong-ho, the candidate for Mayor of Seosan, officially signed a policy agreement with the Chungnam Regional Headquarters of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity (headed by Yoo Mun-deok) on the 15th to guarantee the fundamental rights of cargo workers and ensure public safety.
According to the Chungnam Regional Headquarters of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity, recent freight transportation revenues in the Daesan area have dropped by 1 million KRW to over 8 million KRW per month per transport company compared to the previous year. As a result, the net income of cargo workers has also plummeted by more than 40% on average.
In particular, due to the nature of large cargo trucks, which cost around 300 million KRW, cargo workers bear an average monthly installment payment of 3 million to 3.5 million KRW, and in some cases, upwards of 5 million KRW. Although freight volume has noticeably decreased, fixed costs such as insurance premiums, taxes, and truck registration fees (Jiip-ryo) remain the same, pushing workers to the brink of deficit operations and worsening household debt.
The Cargo Truckers Solidarity raised concerns that cases of selling vehicles and giving up the business are surging due to the livelihood crisis. They added that this is ultimately leading to a structural crisis across the entire local community, resulting in road safety threats from overworked driving and the spread of dumping freight rates.
Accordingly, Candidate Maeng Jeong-ho and the Chungnam Headquarters of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity agreed to jointly pursue practical measures through this agreement. The main contents of the agreement include: Stable implementation of the Safe Trucking Freight Rate System and expansion of its target scope Establishment of a monitoring and supervision system for violations of safe freight rates Creation of a regional-level safe freight rate agreement and bargaining structure Expansion of public parking lots and rest facilities for cargo trucks in Daesan Efforts to improve the exploitative structure of the truck registration system (Jiip) and eliminate the harmful effects of the multi-stage subcontracting structure.
Yoo Mun-deok, head of the Chungnam Regional Headquarters of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity, emphasized, "The reality is that due to the crisis at the Daesan Complex, cargo workers are losing millions of KRW every month and barely holding on with debt," adding, "I hope this agreement does not stop at mere slogans but leads to a substantial guarantee of survival rights so that workers can work safely on the road."
Candidate Maeng Jeong-ho diagnosed the situation, stating, "Listening to the voices of cargo workers on the ground made me deeply realize the underlying cause of Seosan's population decline," and added, "The livelihood crisis of cargo workers is not an individual problem, but a crisis for the entire Seosan economy and a vicious cycle that threatens road safety." He expressed strong determination, saying, "I will solidly reinforce the employment safety net of the Daesan Petrochemical Complex and responsibly implement the promised policy tasks, such as creating a public parking lot for cargo trucks in Daesan."
