The Secret Behind Busan's 'Lighthouse Stamp Tour' Captivating Gen Z
Went for a stamp, ended up with a pictorial — Busan's Emotional Lighthouses Draw Gen Z Crowds Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries & K-AtoN Complete Renovation of Hakri Port and Dongam Fishing Port Lighthouses Transformed Beyond Navigation Aids into Photo Spots and Marine Culture Spaces Filled with Local History Early Morning Influx of Visitors — Achieving a Twofold Effect of Village Environment Improvement and Local Tourism Boost
[Busan/CTN] Reporter Keum-hyeon Ga = With "local emotional travel" and "lighthouse pilgrimages" emerging as new travel trends among the younger generation, the hidden lighthouses of Busan are rapidly rising as "photo sanctuaries" for Gen Z, reports reporter Keum-hyeon Ga of CTN, South Korea's leading internet newspaper.
The Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries (Director Heo Man-wook) announced that it has successfully completed the renovation of the Hakri Port East Breakwater Lighthouse and Dongam Fishing Port Breakwater Lighthouse, which are featured in the "Lighthouse Stamp Tour with Stunning Sunrises" course. The sites have been newly transformed into marine culture spaces that vividly reflect local characteristics.
Going beyond simple facility repairs, this lighthouse renovation project was pushed forward to improve the environment of fishing villages, attract tourists, and stimulate the local economy. In particular, the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries worked closely with local residents to seamlessly blend the unique stories, history, and fishing village culture of the ports into the lighthouse designs.
The Hakri Port East Breakwater Lighthouse in Gijang-gun—named "Hakri" (Crane Village) because many cranes used to gather in the past pine forests—features a design of an elegant crane perched atop a pristine white lighthouse. The contrast between the white lighthouse and the East Sea sunrise, which dyes the water crimson in the early morning, creates a spectacular view. Word of mouth is spreading across social media that "any shot taken here looks like a professional pictorial," leading to an early morning "open run" of visitors looking to capture verification photos.
On the other hand, the Dongam Fishing Port Breakwater Lighthouse, inspired by the small fishing port of Dongam Village and the underwater landscape, is dressed in a bold and warm red color. It harmonizes with the quiet and cozy atmosphere unique to a small harbor, creating an emotional landscape that feels straight out of a movie. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse allows visitors to take in a panoramic view of the East Sea and the sunrise all at once, quickly gaining a reputation as a new "scenic lookout" among lighthouse travelers.
Kim Kang-on, head of the Navigational Aids Division at the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, who led the project, stated, "We cooperated closely with residents so that the lighthouses could transcend their traditional role as simple navigational aids for ships and establish themselves as marine culture spaces that tell local narratives." He added, "Moving forward, we will continue to expand content so that the public can experience lighthouses and marine culture more closely in their daily lives."
The Korea Institute of Aids to Navigation (K-AtoN), an agency under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries responsible for supporting the operation of the nationwide "Lighthouse Stamp Tour," also expressed high expectations. An official from K-AtoN said, "We hope many citizens discover the newly transformed charm of these lighthouses through the stamp tour and experience the beautiful marine culture of Busans fishing villages up close," pledging to accelerate the expansion of various marine cultural content in the future.
Beyond a simple trip to collect stamps, Busans lighthouses are becoming a source of pride for local residents and a gift of everlasting "life shots" for tourists. This spring, if you want to create your own pictorial against the backdrop of the blue sea and the red sun, why not embark on Busan's "Lighthouse Stamp Tour"?
