The Novelists Association of Korea Establishes 'Kim Moon-soo Literary Award' Novelist Lee Won-gyu Named First Laureate

Aimed at inheriting the literary spirit of the late writer Kim Moon-soo and revitalizing the Korean literary scene
The 1st awards ceremony held at Harbor Park Hotel in Incheon, attended by around 90 literary figures

[CTN Literary Bureau = Reporter Ga Geum-hyun] The Novelists Association of Korea (Chairman Lee Sang-moon) has officially established and launched the 'Kim Moon-soo Literary Award' starting this year to honor the legacy of the late novelist Kim Moon-soo, a giant of modern Korean fiction, CTN reports.

The inaugural Kim Moon-soo Literary Award ceremony was held on May 18 in the seminar room of the Harbor Park Hotel in Incheon. The event was attended by around 90 novelists and literary professionals, including executive members of the association, who gathered to celebrate the occasion.

Regarding the purpose of the award, the Novelists Association of Korea stated, "The Kim Moon-soo Literary Award aims to pass down the fierce and dedicated creative spirit of the late novelist Kim Moon-soo to future generations of writers, while injecting fresh vitality into the overall Korean literary community."

Born in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do in 1939, the late novelist Kim Moon-soo made his literary debut in 1961 through the Chosun Ilbo New Spring Literary Contest. For more than half a century, he dedicated his life to writing fiction and nurturing younger writers, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Korean literary world.

Until his passing in 2012, Kim received major domestic literary accolades, including the Dong-in Literary Award, the Contemporary Literature (Hyundai Munhak) Award, the Korean Writers' Award, and the Korea Culture and Arts Award. He also served as a professor at Dongguk University and Hanyang Women's University, training numerous future writers. The establishment of this award encourages younger writers to carry on his lifelong exploration of human dignity and to provide deep insights into society.

The selection process for the award involves the 'Kim Moon-soo Literary Award Steering Committee' recommending a shortlist of writers who serve as role models in terms of both their artwork and literary spirit. The final laureate is then selected through a rigorous evaluation by a judging panel consisting of novelists Baek Si-jong (Publisher of the quarterly Munye Bada), Hwang Choong-sang (Publisher of the quarterly Munhak Namu), and Lee Sang-moon (Chairman of the Novelists Association of Korea).

Through this fair and transparent process, novelist Lee Won-gyu was chosen as the honorable first recipient of the award.

Born in Incheon in 1947, Lee Won-gyu entered the literary world in 1982 when his novel The Medal and the Fetters (Hunjang-gwa Gulle) won the full-length novel contest hosted by Hyundai Munhak (Contemporary Literature).

Since then, he has consistently focused on heavy and profound themes such as national division and the ethnic spirit. He has been highly praised for expanding the horizons of Korean fiction, having previously won the Korean Literature Award, the Dongguk Literary Award, and the Korea Literary Award.

The literary community expects that this award will serve as a momentum for Lee to showcase an even more mature and profound world of work in the future.

Meanwhile, the Kim Moon-soo Literary Award, hosted by the Novelists Association of Korea, will select and announce its recipient annually.
