Kwon Oh-eul, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, stated, "It is highly meaningful that we have developed cultural products so that the independence spirit and ideology of Kim Gu can be naturally enjoyed in daily life to mark the '150th Anniversary of Baekbeom Kim Gu's Birth as a UNESCO Anniversary Year.' The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will continue to make multifaceted efforts to develop various veterans' cultural contents that combine history and culture, and share them with the public." The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, in collaboration with the Korea Heritage Agency under the Korea Heritage Service, announced that it will officially launch three types of veterans' cultural products (goods) starting from the 9th, modernly reinterpreting Kim Gu's independence movement philosophy and his vision of a 'cultural powerhouse' to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth and its designation as a UNESCO anniversary year.
The cultural products featuring Baekbeom Kim Gu consist of items highly accessible in daily life, such as keyrings, magnets, and badges, and were planned as part of intellectual property (IP) creation activities linking veterans' history with cultural product trends highly preferred by the public. Looking at the detailed products, the 'Kim Gu Signed Taegeukgi Finding Keyring' utilizes the 'Long Live Independence' ink calligraphy left after liberation in 1947, designed in a hidden picture puzzle format. The 'Signed Taegeukgi Lenticular Magnet' incorporates lenticular technology that changes its three-dimensional visual effects depending on the angle of view. In addition, the 'Kim Gu Glasses Badge' and 'Kim Gu Mugunghwa Durumagi Badge,' which are motived by the circular glasses and the traditional coat embroidered with Rose of Sharon, were packaged together to increase collectible value. The Ministry and the Korea Heritage Agency are dual-developing the product lines into design-oriented general merchandise and premium traditional craft products made by holders of intangible cultural heritage to target diversified consumer tastes. Starting with these three general goods, additional items will be introduced in August, and the high-quality traditional craft line is scheduled for release in November. These products are available simultaneously through the online shopping mall 'K-Heritage Store' and offline stores at the 'Korean Cultural Center' inside Incheon International Airport.
The government-led initiative to break away from the heavy and stereotyped patriotic narratives of the past and develop practical, design-oriented cultural products tailored to the consumption trends of the younger generation is evaluated as a progressive administration in terms of spreading a culture of veterans' affairs in daily life and inspiring national pride. By converting the legacy of a historical figure into mainstream consumer goods rather than keeping it on museum shelves, it is expected to lower the barrier to entry for patriots and veterans' affairs.
However, for such public-driven merchandise rollouts not to end up as mere one-time administrative displays, the challenge remains to secure self-sustaining competitiveness in the actual consumer market by diversifying distribution channels and marketing strategies, such as collaborating with private character brands or established labels. If distribution relies solely on limited channels like public shopping malls or specific airport venues, the promotional impact relative to budget investment risks being confined to a fraction of enthusiasts. Therefore, authorities must focus administrative capabilities on substantial popularization strategies, such as utilizing crowd-funding platforms to drive early demand and boldly expanding offline touchpoints into select shops and pop-up stores where the younger generation gathers.
