Park Yun-hee, Director-General of the Youth, Women, and Education Bureau of Daegu Metropolitan City, stated, "The task of raising a child is completed only when the attention of the community and the active participation of the father come together. I hope that the 8th Dad Group's activities will serve as a precious opportunity to discover the value and reward of childcare, and we will spare no support so that fathers can actively participate as the main agents of parenting." Daegu Metropolitan City announced that it held the official launch ceremony for the '8th Daegu 100-Dads Group' at the main auditorium of the Sankyeok City Hall Bureau on June 13 to encourage fathers' active participation in childcare and spread a social atmosphere of co-parenting.
The 'Daegu 100-Dads Group' is Daegu's representative male parenting practice group where novice fathers with children aged from 3 to the second grade of elementary school gather to share parenting concerns, perform various weekly missions, and self-develop their parenting capabilities. Having marked its eighth cycle this year since its first launch in 2019, the dad group boasts high recruitment enthusiasm year after year. In particular, this year showed immense interest with 170 applicants crowding for the 100-member quota, recording a 1.7 to 1 competition rate. The city prioritized multicultural, multi-child, and newly participating families to compose an inclusive parenting community. The launch ceremony was filled with tailored side programs such as a custom calligraphy topper photo zone, sticker tattoo experiences, and keycap clicker making, followed by the main event 'Cheerful Sports Day' where fathers and children shared physical communication through rolling big balls and shoe archery.
The selected 8th members will start their journey of growing together with their children until the end of the year, starting with this launch ceremony. Members are scheduled to build daily parenting habits by performing weekly online missions given across 5 core sectors: play, health, daily life, education, and relationships. Concurrently, the city will operate offline special lectures by childcare experts to help novice fathers learn practical parenting skills, while appointing fathers active on social media as 'Publicity Keepers' to share vivid parenting vlogs, expanding the recognition that parenting is a shared responsibility of both parents throughout the local community.
At a time when the government points to 'expanding male parental leave and participation' as a core keyword to reverse low birth rates, the local government's preemptive move to organize novice fathers to provide weekend-oriented experience programs and annual educational curriculums is evaluated as an extremely effective family policy. In particular, breaking away from simple theoretical injection education to attempt play-emotional approaches like sports days, and prioritizing multicultural and multi-child families to raise social solidarity, is a politically smart administrative step.
However, critics point out that despite the high popularity and short-term box office success of this government-led project every year, if it fails to lead to fundamental changes in the overall working environment of the Daegu region, it could end up as a 'weekend event for a selected few.' This is because a conservative organizational culture where employees must walk on eggshells even for punctual clock-outs, let alone flexible work arrangements or male parental leave, is still prevalent in many small businesses and small-scale workplaces in Daegu. Daegu City should not settle for exhibition administration that selects 100 fathers to promote exemplary cases; it must meticulously complement legislative and financial follow-up guidelines to grant work-life balance incentives to the companies these fathers belong to or derive local companies' participation. Furthermore, only when follow-up administration strengthening infrastructure links with Gu and Gun childcare comprehensive support centers is supported so that members can voluntarily continue meetings after the year-end event ends will Daegu be able to complete an authentic community parenting city free of solitary child-rearing.
