"Erasing Past Flooding Nightmares via Preemptive Defense"... Cheonan City Conducts Inspection on Seongjeong Pumping Station
Acting Mayor Kim Seok-pil presides over test runs... Completing checks on 19 stations ahead of rainy season to tackle flash downpours.
May 20, 2026
[Cheonan/CTN] Reporter Kang Hyun-su = Cheonan City has launched a high-intensity field inspection and unannounced test runs at pump stations in chronic high-risk low-lying areas to flawlessly safeguard the lives and properties of citizens from natural disasters such as sudden summer heavy rains and mega-sized typhoons.
The city announced on the 20th that it proactively pushed forward this inspection to check the internal drainage capacity—the core defense function of flood-prone sectors—and to secure citizen safety against localized downpours that have become unpredictable due to global climate anomalies.
The Seongjeong 1-1 District Drainage Pump Station, where the intensive inspection took place on this day, serves as a core bastion of urban defense, taking charge of a massive 24.8-hectare beneficiary area around Seongjeong 1-dong. This specific area suffered severe residential and commercial flooding during heavy rains on July 16, 2017, and August 3, 2020, driven by poor internal drainage into the swollen Seongjeong Stream and insufficient capacity of rainwater pipes. In response, the city has raised its defense barriers by continuously expanding and reinforcing drainage pumps from 2019 to last year to fundamentally resolve the chronic flooding hazards.
For this field inspection, a choice inspection team including Vice Mayor and Acting Mayor Kim Seok-pil and public officials from disaster response divisions attended to execute rigorous verifications simulating real conditions. The team personally operated and verified the normal functions of the trash racks and four drainage pumps equipped with a powerful processing capacity of 132 cubic meters per minute. Furthermore, they pinpointed the emergency power supply systems designed to run the station during power outages triggered by severe storms, alongside evaluating discharge pipes and sluice gate statuses, flawlessly erasing administrative gaps. Concurrently, they closely checked on-site workers' safety management manuals and real-time emergency information sharing networks to ensure swift initial operations during nighttime or extreme downpours.
Currently, Cheonan City is meticulously running a total of 19 drainage pump stations across the city, including the Seongjeong 1-1 district, and is aggressively driving construction projects for new drainage pump stations in vulnerable sectors to fundamentally eradicate flooding anxieties. The city plans to complete 100% advance inspections and maintenance for major rivers and overall disaster defense facilities before the summer rainy season begins in earnest. It also plans to maintain a step-by-step night emergency shift framework capable of immediate operation and field control upon weather warnings, fundamentally blocking security voids.
Kim Seok-pil, Vice Mayor and Acting Mayor of Cheonan, strongly urged, "As localized heavy downpours driven by climate anomalies have become annualized and frequent, advance checks and initial 10-minute responses serve as the most critical factors in disaster administration." He added, "Please mobilize all municipal capabilities to protect the noble lives and properties of 700,000 Cheonan citizens by thoroughly managing the operation status of drainage pump stations—the heart of defense facilities—365 days a year and highly strengthening rainy season emergency response frameworks."
